PHANTOM - BIOGRAPHY
Montreal-born singer, guitarist and songwriter Elsie Martins has a somewhat unusual story to tell.
Known in her Canadian homeland as the much-loved MusiquePlus music television presenter/journalist, Elsie left a burgeoning television career to relocate to London, UK, where she formed PHANTOM.
Phantom is now a duo. Elsie’s beguiling vocal style leads the Phantom sound, which incorporates her on guitar duties alongside Jonny Martin on bass/EBow. With press accolades referencing Elsie as a female version of Tinderstick's Stuart Staples and Morrissey, nods to Nick Cave, the Velvet Underground, the Shoegaze genre and even mention of Phantom’s music fitting a David Lynch film soundtrack, it has been a difficult task to describe the Phantom sound - a unique bitter-sweet weaving of the delicate and the bold; the thunderous and the devastatingly seductive.
Influences: A fine single malt whiskey, damp hair in the darkness, a well-cut jacket, The British Mueseum, false eyelashes, the smell of rosin, butterfly kisses, failing to resist the call of handmade chocolate, a large-quiet cat on the bed... Sounds like SMOKE & MIRRORS... Phantom have released their debut single "Great Pretender" on Parallax Sounds is now available on CD and worldwide digital distrubution from the 28th September 2009.

"Phantom's music is very original sounding. Elsie's vocals sound abit like Claudia Brücken of Propaganda. Yes you can hear Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, The Chameleons and some rockabilly. They have great atmospherics and mood in their music. It's good to hear something different and original in a world where originality no longer exists and Phantom have that quality about them..." - Parallax Sounds, July 2009
